As previously reported, NIN’s Trent Reznor, Rage’s Tom Morello, R.E.M., Pearl Jam, the Roots, Rise Against, Billy Bragg, Jackson Browne, and other famous musicians have joined the National Campaign to Close Guantanamo and released a string of statements condemning the use of music for torture at Gitmo. Well, it looks like the debate is heating up a bit:

Debra Burlingame, director of Keep America Safe, a political organization co-founded by Liz Cheney that focuses “on issues like troop levels, missile defense, detainees, and interrogation,” called Reznor and company’s political stand “pathetic,” telling the Washington Times:

It’s almost laughable to think that heavy metal bands like Nine Inch Nails and Rage Against the Machine have a moral authority on national security issues.

They’re worried about torture of hard-core terrorists? This is really something I would expect to read in the Onion.

Nirvana - School

Sometimes I think that out in the ether somewhere there is this oil well of artistic creativity and greatness, and you’re lucky to get a few drops of it here and there over the years. I also think that, even given all the bullshit that came later, for about 18 months in 1989-1990 Nirvana mainlined directly into the motherlode of this oil well. “Bleach” could be, probably is, the greatest debut record ever. Punkmetal stoner rock to its fullest expression.

Twitter recently began rolling out a new feature called Lists - basically a way for you to organize and categorize the streams you follow on the service, both publicly and privately.

I funnel this Tumblr blog into a Twitter account - and while I don’t love how it renders there, I mostly did it to give people the opportunity of subscribing in a different place instead of Tumblr or via RSS, if they so choose. Since I started the account, I’ve also begun following a bunch of great music-related folks. And while it’s by no means comprehensive yet, I did a quick pass at organizing them today and wanted to share with you. For your tweetin’ pleasure, I give you:

If you don’t know what they do - they’re a pretty rad service similar to CouchSurfing.org but aimed at bands. From their About Us:

Touring isn’t cheap or easy. We know, we’ve done it for years. We’ve stayed in some great and not so great places while on tour, so we know it can be hit or miss. We figured people are fans of bands and bands become fans of other bands. If we give them all a place to meet under a common need, good things will come of it.

Plenty has been written about sneakerheads and their blogs. This recent Adweek story is only an update for those in the know, but sneaker blogs are still a phenomenal scene and online industry to behold.

In the 2000 book The Tipping Point, author Malcolm Gladwell laid out a theory about how hit products or movements spread. People who know a lot of people (called connectors) cross paths with mavens. Nine years down the line, it seems that the connectors are unnecessary. Give mavens a blog and access to Facebook or Twitter, and they will rule the category.
